Telling time is one of those skills you’ll use every single day—from catching your train to meeting friends. It can feel a bit tricky at first because of the special pronunciations, but it’s all about spotting the patterns.

Here is how to master it without getting bogged down by the "textbook" confusion.

1. The Core Structure

In Japanese, you simply place the unit after the number.

  • [Hour] + 時 (ji)

  • [Minute] + 分 (fun/pun)

The "Watch-Out" Hours

Most numbers follow a standard pattern, but pay close attention to these three:

  • 4:00 is 四時 よじ yoji (not yonji)

  • 7:00 is 7時 しちじ shichiji (not nanaji)

  • 9:00 is 9時 くじ kuji (not kyuji)

2. Handling Minutes (The Part That Trips Everyone Up)

The reading for "minute" 分 (fun/pun) changes depending on the number. You don't need to memorize them all at once—just practice the 1s, 3s, 6s, 8s, and 10s until they feel natural.

  • 1, 6, 8, 10 minutes: End with a small

  • The rest: Generally follow the

Pro tip: Don't stress the logic. Just say them out loud until your mouth remembers the rhythm.

3. The "Half-Past" Shortcut

You rarely need to say the exact minute for 30 minutes past. Just use 半 (han).

Niji-han

Rokuji-han

It’s how almost everyone speaks in daily life, so embrace it!

4. AM vs. PM: The Easy Way

In Japanese, these markers come before the time:

  • 午前 (ごぜん Gozen): AM

Gogo): PM

Example: Gogo sanji is 3:00 PM. Notice how it mirrors the English order? You wouldn't say "3:00 afternoon," you’d say "afternoon 3:00."
